My piece for More than Shelter is titled Barangay, which translates into village in Tagalog, a widely spoken language in the Philippines. Barangay is a mixed media piece that celebrates the spaces and places (historical, permanent, and liminal) in Hampton Roads where Filipino folks get together. Barangay is a painting, frame, and bookcase with curious images and objects that center experiences of folks in the Filipino community of Hampton Roads. Images of community centers, Navy housing, restaurants, bakeries, places of worship, and nightlife venues are included in Barangay. This piece is a playful tribute to the community that raised and nurtured me.
